Overview

Phelps is a town in the northeast corner of Ontario County, bordered to the north by Wayne County (town of Arcadia), to the east by Seneca County (town of Junius), to the south by Geneva and Seneca, and to the west by Hopewell and Manchester. Phelps includes a village also called Phelps, and part of the village of Clifton Springs (the rest is in neighboring Manchester), as well as several hamlets.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, the closest major supermarket is a Wegmans store at Miller and Finch streets in Newark, Wayne County, about 7 miles north. Wegmans and Tops Friendly Markets also have stores in Geneva, about 10 miles south. The Wegmans market is at 300 Hamilton St. and the Tops store is at 381 Hamilton St. For retail shopping, the neighboring town of Arcadia has a Walmart Superstore and the Arcadia Shopping Plaza east of the village of Newark on Route 31. Geneva also has a variety of shopping choices, including a Walmart store..



Recreation & Entertainment

he Sauerkraut Festival in summer is the highlight of the area’s annual events. The Phelps Arts Center, at 15 Church St., promotes visual and performing arts in the region through exhibits, concerts and education. Terry Ho Stables, a horse-riding stable, is at 993 Wilber Road. Clifton Springs holds an annual Sulphur Springs Festival in June, a Mennonite Quilt and Craft Sale in October, and a Festival of Lights in December.



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway passes through the northern part of Phelps. Route 96, which also runs east-west, parallels the Thruway. The main north-south highway is Route 88. A busier north-south road, Route 14, is a few miles east of Phelps.



Pros & Cons

Phelps is mainly an agricultural town. If you’re looking for more to do, you’re close to Newark, the commercial hub of Wayne County, and to Geneva, an historic town and city just south of Phelps. Geneva has access to Seneca Lake, part of the enormously popular Finger Lakes region. The Waterloo Premium Outlets stores are a quick drive southeast.
