Canandaigua is the name of both a town and city in central Ontario County. Both are on the shore of Canandaigua Lake, part of the popular Finger Lakes region. The city, which sits on the northern edge of the lake, serves as the county seat of Ontario County. Canandaigua is bordered to the north by Farmington; to the east by Hopewell, Gorham and Canandaigua Lake; to the south by the lake and South Bristol; and to the west by East Bloomfield and Bristol.

Canandaigua offers an abundance of shopping. For groceries, there’s a Wegmans supermarket on the well-traveled Routes 5 & 20 corridor and a Tops Friendly Markets store on North Street at Route 332. For retail, stores like Walmart, Big Lots, T.J. Maxx and Bed, Bath & Beyond can be found on 5 & 20. A quick drive northwest is the enormous Eastview Mall in Victor. Main Street Canandaigua also has a bevy of shops, stores and restaurants..

Recreation & Entertainment

Boating is enormously popular in the summer, when people stroll along the city pier and check out the boaters. Kershaw Park is a busy public swimming beach. The performing arts center at Finger Lakes Community College holds concerts that draw audiences from all over. Canandaigua Theatres is a movie-theater multiplex on County Road 10.

Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway has an exit and entrance just outside of Canandaigua. Route 332, which is Main Street in Canandaigua, runs north-south through the town. Routes 5 and 20 are a busy east-west thoroughfare and known in parts as the Eastern Boulevard. Route 21 runs diagonally, southwest to northeast, through Canandaigua.

Pros & Cons

There’s a lot to like in Canandaigua, with its rich history, scenic setting, abundant shopping and, above all, Canandaigua Lake. This is the entryway to the western Finger Lakes, where boating, gorgeous vistas, summer cottages and well-known winemaking are enormous attractions.
