Welcome to Hopewell, NY

Overview

Hopewell is a town in central Ontario County, bordered to the north by Manchester, to the east by Phelps and Seneca, to the south by Gorham and to the west by Canandaigua. Hopewell is a sparsely populated town of about 3,700 residents, and is best known as the home of Finger Lakes Community College and the Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (formerly known as the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center).

Essentials

Hopewell has only a few small stores. Most shopping options are in nearby Canandaigua, which has, for groceries, a Wegmans supermarket on Eastern Boulevard (Routes 5 & 20) and a Top’s Friendly Markets store on North Street at Route 332. Canandaigua also has a variety of retail shopping, including a Walmart on Eastern Boulevard and smaller stores along Main Street. A quick drive to Victor (about 16 miles northwest) gets you to Eastview Mall along with stores like Target and Kmart..

Recreation & Entertainment

The Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center, on the FLCC campus, attracts national musical touring acts and also serves as the “summer home” of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The college also occasionally has events for the public.

Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway runs just north of Hopewell, with an exit in Farmington. Routes 5 & 20 are a busy, well-traveled, almost old-fashioned east-west route, running just south of Hopewell. Traffic can be extremely heavy near the performing arts center during summertime concerts, but tends to flow well.

Pros & Cons

Hopewell is almost a bedroom community of Canandaigua. Hopewell does not have the commercial appeal of Canandaigua or Victor, and is much more a small-town, farming community. The college is a plus, as is proximity to Canandaigua Lake. Traffic at the performing arts center can be heavy at times.
